Appendix A: Configuring FILESTREAMon a SQL Server InstanceIn this appendix, we provide detailed instructions for how to enable the FILESTREAMfeature, and how to disable it if necessary.You can enable FILESTREAM while you are installing a SQL Server 2008 instance,either using the installation wizard, or unattended. Alternatively, you can change theconfiguration settings on an existing SQL Server instance to enable the feature.As described in Chapter 1, the process requires both Windows Administrator-levelactions (to enable the feature) and SQL Server Administrator-level actions (to set up theFILESTREAM access level). If you enable FILESTREAM as part of the installation, theaccess level is automatically set up based on the settings you select during installation.However, if you enable FILESTREAM post-installation, you will have to configure it intwo places: in the SQL Server Configuration Manager to enable the feature, and in theSQL Server instance properties to set the access level.In most cases, you might decide to enable FILESTREAM as part of the installationprocess if you know for sure that the feature is needed. If you do not know at the timeof installation whether a particular feature is needed or not, then it is a better choice toinstall and configure just those features that are needed, and enable other features onlywhen required.It is important to note that a service restart is not needed to enable the FILESTREAMfeature. So there is no harm in skipping the FILESTREAM configuration step duringinstallation and enabling it only when needed. However, fully disabling FILESTREAMwill require a service restart to take effect. Therefore, it's better not to enable it duringinstallation if you do not really need it.459
