In all the great struggles<strong>of</strong> human history so terrible a waste <strong>of</strong> life wasnever witnessed as before the walls <strong>of</strong> Acre. Itbecame the stronghold <strong>of</strong> Knighthood <strong>and</strong> continuedto be the headquarters <strong>of</strong> the Order until 1217,145
