Ishmael was at first regarded as "the son <strong>of</strong> thepromise," but after the birth <strong>and</strong> weaning <strong>of</strong> Isaac, he wasdriven from his father's house, at the age <strong>of</strong> about seventeen,<strong>and</strong> with his mother took their way towards Egypt, her nativel<strong>and</strong>. Overcome with heat <strong>and</strong> thirst, <strong>and</strong> then miraculouslyrelieved (Gen. xxi.), he remained in the wilderness <strong>of</strong>Paran, "<strong>and</strong> his mother took him a wife out <strong>of</strong> the l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>Egypt," <strong>and</strong> he became the father <strong>of</strong> twelve sons, heads <strong>of</strong>Arab tribes. He seems to have become on friendly termswith Isaac, <strong>and</strong> to have attended at the bedside <strong>of</strong> their dyingfather.
