C, just before the battle <strong>of</strong>the Israelites <strong>and</strong> the Philistines* at Ebenezer, nearShiloh, the ark <strong>of</strong> the covenant was brought fromShiloh into the camp <strong>of</strong> the Israelites to inspire themwith greater courage <strong>and</strong> confidence, but the Philistinesovercame them, captured the ark <strong>and</strong> carriedit first to Ashdod, then to Gath, <strong>and</strong> fromthere to Ekron. In 1115 B. C. it was returned bythe Philistines from Ekron to the Israelites at Kirjath-jearim,a city <strong>of</strong> the Gibeonites situated aboutnine miles northwest <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem, <strong>and</strong> there placedin the house <strong>of</strong> Abinadab, a Levite, where it remainedfor seventy years before being conveyed toSam. iv.-vi.).Jerusalem (I<strong>The</strong> tabernacle was taken from Shiloh to Gibeon,*but the exact time <strong>of</strong> its removal is not known. InI. Chron. xxi. 29, it states that the tabernacle <strong>of</strong>Moses was still at Gibeon (1017 B. C.). Again, inII. Chron. i.3-13, that the tabernacle still remainedat Gibeon, <strong>and</strong> that Solomon went there to sacrificebefore it. This is the last mention made <strong>of</strong> it.Jewish History.<strong>The</strong> firstJewish history extends from the time<strong>of</strong> the conquest <strong>of</strong> Canaan, 1445 B. C., to the establishment<strong>of</strong> the monarchy under Saul, 1095 B.
