EBP <strong>in</strong> <strong>Foster</strong> <strong>Parent</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>Support</strong>S<strong>in</strong>clair, & Wilson, 2000). In general, qualities of a good social worker, as reported by fosterparents, <strong>in</strong>clude: 1) show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> how carers are manag<strong>in</strong>g; 2) be<strong>in</strong>g easy to contact <strong>and</strong>responsive when contacted; 3) follow<strong>in</strong>g through on plans; 4) be<strong>in</strong>g prepared to listen <strong>and</strong> offerencouragement; 5) tak<strong>in</strong>g account of the family’s needs <strong>and</strong> circumstances; 6) keep<strong>in</strong>g fosterparents <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g; 7) ensur<strong>in</strong>g that payments, compla<strong>in</strong>ts, etc. areprocessed as soon as possible; <strong>and</strong> 8) attend<strong>in</strong>g to the child’s <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>and</strong> needs, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>gfoster parents where appropriate (Fisher et al., 2000). <strong>Support</strong> provided dur<strong>in</strong>g times of crisisplays an especially important role <strong>in</strong> the attitudes formed by foster parents of social workers(Fisher et al., 2000).<strong>Foster</strong> parent retention is also associated with agency <strong>and</strong> worker support. Negativerelationships with professional agency staff are l<strong>in</strong>ked with foster parents who are consider<strong>in</strong>gquitt<strong>in</strong>g (Rodger, Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs, & Leschied, 2006). <strong>Foster</strong> parents who actually quit may perceivethey lacked <strong>in</strong>formation about the unique parent<strong>in</strong>g dem<strong>and</strong>s of foster children, whereas <strong>in</strong>qualified homes plann<strong>in</strong>g to quit agency relationships might be the decid<strong>in</strong>g factor (Rhodes et al.,2001). When deal<strong>in</strong>g with loss, such as the death or removal of a child from a foster family’shome, agency services <strong>and</strong> supports are reported to be valuable factors of foster parent retention(Urquhart, 1989).Treatment foster parents may also benefit from sources of support outside of the agency.Direct access to on-site professionals such as mental health care providers, case workers, <strong>and</strong>family advocates is viewed as helpful <strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g access to needed resources <strong>and</strong> referrals,obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g available <strong>in</strong>formation about children’s backgrounds, <strong>and</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g to resolve childbehavior problems <strong>in</strong> the home (Kramer & Houston, 1999).
