3. the vision 2. Lake and hydrology Since flooding and water quality is of great concern at Lake Ellyn Park, strategies to improve water quality and reduce rainwater runoff should be implemented at the park and surrounding community. This includes green infrastructure, native landscape, and water quality enhancement techniques. The following strategies are being employed to contribute to a healthier Lake Ellyn: Filter Berms Filter berms located near the two inlet structures provide the first line of defense to filter stormwater entering the lake. The planted filter berms are constructed of open graded gravel that allows runoff to pass through them. Because the roots are in virtually hydroponic conditions, they take their nutrients from the water rather than from soil. Most of the water entering the lake from the two inlet structures will pass through the gravel of the filter berms allowing the plant roots to take up the nutrients as well as other dissolved pollutants in the runoff water. The berms will also help to filter sediments and other particulate pollutants. Larger flood events will pass over the top of the berms, to ensure that the berms do not increase flood potential. 3. the vision Floating Restorers The filter berms described above will primarily address runoff as it enters the lake. The floating restorers are intended to address water already in the lake and pollutants that are not filtered by the berms. Floating restorers would be located at key points throughout Lake Ellyn to provide further cleansing. Vegetation within the floating restorers have their roots suspended within the lake water below and like within the filter berms, the roots will take up nutrients from the lake water, reducing the availability of nutrients to grow algae. Further, the restorers include a plastic substrate that hangs within the water, providing a surface for biofilms to develop to further utilize nutrients within the lake water. The restorers are mobile, so they can be placed in the most strategic locations during the spring, summer, and fall, and relocated to the edges of the lake during the winter to allow a larger skating surface. Shoreline Restoration & Stabilization Stabilization of the shoreline through native plant community establishment will help to reduce shoreline erosion and take up nutrients and other pollutants as well as provide aquatic habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms. Additionally, renovation of some portions of the stone edge can provide additional stability and aesthetic benefits.
