the 1969 paper. The unstated assumption is well hidden. When a typical fourth-year hydrogeology class is challenged to find the error in the 1969 paper the students are rarely successful. Some lessons: the word of experts and “authorities” may be wrong; the unstated assumptions are usually hidden in the opening paragraphs of a paper or in the introduction to the theory section; just because a paper has been published in a “refereed” journal is no guarantee that it is correct; pay special attention to the “outliers” in the data that are explained away, ignored or not presented at all.
