Morelia es la capital de Michoacán y cabecera del municipio
del mismo nombre. La ciudad fue fundada por el Virrey Don
Antonio de Mendoza el 18 de mayo de 1541, con el nombre
original de “Nueva Ciudad de Michoacán”, que cambió a “Valladolid”
en 1578. Pero desde 1828 se llama “Morelia” en honor a su hijo Don
José María Morelos y Pavón, héroe de la Independencia de México.

Morelia is the capital of Michoacán and head of the municipality of
the same name. The city was founded by the Viceroy Don Antonio
de Mendoza on May 18, 1541, with the original name of “New
City of Michoacán,” which then changed to “Valladolid” in 1578.
But since 1828 is called “Morelia” after his son Don José María
Morelos y Pavón, hero of the Mexican Independence.
El Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM) que desde 2003
despuntó como uno de los principales festivales nacionales dedicados
a este arte, tiene por objetivo reunir al público michoacano con
la comunidad cinéfila y los grandes cineastas mundiales. Este evento
se ha convertido en una plataforma para promover el trabajo de los
nuevos talentos de la cinematografía mexicana.
Y por otro lado está la gastronomía michoacana que fusiona la etnia
purépecha con sabores y especias que traídas por los conquistadores
españoles. Es muy variada y si no sabes qué probar, puedes empezar
por las corundas que son parientes de los tamales; el churipo que es
un caldo preparado con chiles rojos, carne y verduras; las atapakuas,
un guiso espeso de carne y vegetales muy picante que se acompaña
con queso; los uchepos elaborados con maíz tierno o las tradicionales
morelianas y por supuesto la bebida tradicional de Michoacán que es
la reconocida Charanda, elaborada con caña destilada.
Una caminata por las calles del centro histórico de Morelia es una
experiencia inolvidable. La arquitectura de la ciudad atrapa la vista;
sus edificios históricos han sido captados en una gran cantidad de películas
y fotografías. El monumento más distintivo de la ciudad es su
acueducto, el cual conserva 253 arcos. Su construcción fue ordenada
por Fray Antonio de San Miguel en 1785 para proveer de agua a la
ciudad. La Catedral, debido al largo tiempo que duró su construcción,
presenta influencia tanto barroca como neoclásica, en su interior se
aloja un órgano alemán de 4 mil 600 flautas, uno de los más grandes
de Latinoamérica; recomendamos visitarla de noche, pues a esta hora
se lleva a cabo un espectáculo de luz, sonido y juegos pirotécnicos.
En 1991, la UNESCO inscribió a Morelia en la lista del Patrimonio. El
Centro Histórico es la ciudad mexicana con más edificios catalogados
como monumentos arquitectónicos (posee 1,113 y de ellos 260 fueron
señalados como relevantes), de manera que visitarla ofrece la garantía
de un recorrido interesante por su valor histórico y arquitectónico.
A walk around the streets of the historic center of Morelia is an
unforgettable experience. The architecture of the city catches the
eye; its historic buildings have been captured in a lot of movies
and photos. The most distinctive monument in the city is its
aqueduct, which retains 253 arches. Its construction was ordered
by Fray Antonio de San Miguel in 1785 to provide water to the
city. The Cathedral, due to the long period of its construction, has
both baroque and neoclassical influence, inside there is a German
organ of 4600 flutes, one of the largest in Latin America; we
recommend you to visit it at night, because that’s when a show of
light, sound and fireworks.
In 1991, UNESCO inscribed Morelia in the World Heritage List.
The Historical Center is the Mexican city with more buildings listed
as architectural monuments (it has 1,113 and 260 of them were
identified as relevant), so that visiting it comes with a guarantee of
an interesting tour of its historical and architectural value.
The International Morelia Film Festival (FICM), which has
stood out since 2003 as one of the main national festivals
dedicated to this art, aims to bring together the public with the
cinephile Michoacan community and major world filmmakers.
This event has become a platform to promote the work of new
talents of Mexican cinema.
On the other hand we have the Michoacán cuisine that fuses the
Purépecha ethnic with flavors and spices that were brought by
the Spanish conquistadors. It is varied and if you do not know
what to try, you can start by corundas who are relatives of
tamales, churipo which is a soup made with red chilies, meat
and vegetables, atapakuas, which are a thick stew of meat and
vegetables, very spicy, and it is accompanied with cheese; the
uchepos made with sweet corn or the traditional morelianas and
of course the traditional drink of Michoacan, the well-known
Charanda prepared with distilled cane.
