Green spaces and
place-making
The best place-making is usually the
result of determined civic leadership,
combined with effective public
involvement and a high level of
professional skill. Such leadership
is essential in resolving conflicts of
interest into an achievable vision of
what a place can become.
Effective public involvement in the
design process is essential – not only to
ensure that the spaces that are created
reflect the values and patterns of life of
the people who will use them, but also
to create the sense of ownership on
which the success of any public
space depends. Of course many
places that we value – the village green,
wildflower meadows, back gardens
– have evolved over long periods and
have adapted to changing needs.
A range of stakeholders should
be involved in both the strategic
and the local elements of the
design of new and existing places
