ZAJEČAR − CAPITAL OF SERBIAN EAST ter the abdication of King Milan, he won the elections and formed his first government in 1891. He was President of the Belgrade municipality from 1896-1897, ambassador in St. Petersburg 1893-1894. He was in political disfavor between 1898-1899, and, “morally and politically compromised” during the next four years, but back onto the political stage after the May coup in 1903 when the Karađorđević dynasty came to power. He was a member of the State Council, then the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Prime Minister (since 1904): evolving from a disheveled national revolutionary and follower of left wing ideologies to become an authentic Serbian national and civic politician. From 1903 to 1918 his life and actions were at the center of Serbian people and state. This was the time of the Customs War with Austria-Hungary (1906-1911), the annexation crisis (1908), the Balkan Wars (1912-1914) and World War One (1914-1918). Besides the commonly known mainstream of political history, he discreetly helped the Serbian and Yugoslav actions in the Balkans, implemented the concept of “Balkans for the Balkan peoples,” helped with Serbian propaganda in the areas under Turkish and Austro- Hungarian rule, and enabled Serbia to become a respectable military force . Contemporaries, both friends and enemies, testify that he was “wise, pragmatic, informed, calm, persistent and moderate in the private life”. Although they claim that he was not eloquent, he left for posteriority some great stuff intawoven with anecdotes and jokes. In March 1992 the Foundation “Nikola Pasic” was established in Zaječar and from it came the idea of shooting a documentary about this statesman, as well as support for holding an international conference and exhibition “Nikola Pašić – trace of documents”, seeking to raise a monument to him in the city center. Interestingly, the initiative to raise the monument existed since 1927, and a committee was even formed (headed by the Patriarch Dimitrje) to implement this idea. However, Zaječar repaid its debt to its distinguished fellow citizen only in 1995. Đorđe Genčić (1861-1938) Đorđe Genčić was an industrialist, owner of mines and concessions, Minister of Internal Affairs at the time of King 190 1 2 3 4 5 Monument to Ni ko la Pa ši ć in Belgrade Pre-election announcement of Đor đr Gen či ć, September 1927 Ni ko la Pa šić Adam Bo go sa vlje vić Đor đe Gen čić Weakness Highly sensitive towards his children, in his recent years of life, Ni ko la Pa šić was “recklessly tolerant regarding corruption affairs of his son, which was destroying his reputation with the people and multiplied his political opponents.” At the reception held on 9 th December 1926, even King Alek san dar I Ka ra đor đe vić reproached him sharply for that. When he came back home, Ni ko la Pa ši ć felt sick. He died of a heart attack that same night.
