The most important projects conducted in
the Medical Centre of Zaječar are the following:
“Emergency Reconstruction of 20
Hospitals in Srbia” (aided by The Ministry
of Helath of the Republic of Serbia and
Europena Investment Bank), “Primary
Helth Care Policy in the Balkans“ (Canadian
International Development Agency),
“Enhancement of Preventive Healt Care in
Serbia” (European Agency for Reconstruction),
“Roma Health Quality Improvement”
(two projects, aided by the Ministry
of Health) “Medical Waste Managemt”
(European Agency for Reconstruction and
Ministry of Health) “Serbian Health Care
Development – Additional Finnacing”
(The World Bank), “Delivery of Improved
Local Services – DILS Project“ (Project:
“Improvement of Health Care Assesibility
to People with Disabilities in Zaječar”).

the aim to faciliate the communication and
the doctor selection process.
Medical Centre of Zaječar employs 1,019
workers, 184 of which are medical doctors
(133 specialists), 530 nurses, 4 pharmacists,
14 dentists, 20 dental nurses, 11 health associates,
35 administrative officers and 220 logisticians.
There are 8 employees with a Master’s
degree, 9 sub-specialists and 22 primariuses.
Since human resources are a significant
part of a health care system, the employees
are provided with the possibility of continuous
medical education and participation in
congresses and professional symposiums.
Professional education is organized by
Zaječar sub-office of Serbian Medical Association
and Association of Health Workers.
Professional symposium of medical doctors,
dentists and pharmacists “Ti moč ki me dicin
ski da ni” (Timok Medical Days) has been
gathering prominent experts from Serbia and
abroad for three decades. Medical Gazette of
Timok has been issued since 1974.
The beneficiary is in the centre of the
system. Since 2007, the opinion of employees
and beneficiaries has been monitored in an
organized manner, and the results of the regular
surveys are primarily used by the Quality
Improvement Committee.
Primary health care performs 450,000 examinations
per year (10% are of preventive
nature). Specialistic and consulting services
perform approximately 200,000 examinations
and over 500,000 services per year. Diagnostic
services perform 1,200,000 laboratory, radiology,
transfusion and pathology services.
Stationary Department, containing 430 beds,
provides approximately 100,000 days of hospitalization
per year for 15,500 people with average
duration of treatment of 6.4 days. Daily
hospital provides 9,000 days for 2,600 people
per year, within Departments of Internal Medicine,
Surgery and Psychiatry. Surgery performs
over 4,000 surgical interventions, while
100 people use 9,700 services of dialysis.
Medical Centre of Zaječar has, therefore, become
a modern highly professional healthcare
institution during the last year, being
recognizable throughout the region. It used
to be ranked highly among the healthcare
institutions in Serbia on regular basis (for
example, Zaječar Hospital was the second in
Serbia in 2006, and the third in 2008). Investments
in infrastructure and modern medical
equipment will continue. There is a new
multi-slice scanner (procured by the support
from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of
Serbia), a new mammography (support from
the Government of Japan), a new angio room
is to be opened, where coronographies and
stent installations will be performed on the
patients with acute myocardial infarction…
