ZAJEČAR - CAPITAL OF SERBIAN EAST
Su vo dol Monastery, detail of a fresco, 20 th century
1807. After the liberation of Belgrade in 1806,
death of Osma n Pa zva no glu in early 1807 and
inflammation of war between Russia and Turkey,
Ka ra đor đe allowed people from Timok
and Crna reka to raise a rebellion. Led by
haj duk-Velj ko and priest Ra di sa v, they soon
liberated the major part of Krajina and Gurgu
sov ci, inclusing Za je čar.
1813. In order to resist Na po le o n, Russia
already stopped the war against Turkey. A
severe crisis ensued, and soon the failure of
the First Serbian Insurrection. Haj duk Velj ko
Pe tr o vić was killed with unprecedented heroism,
defending Ne go tin. Turks conquered the
entire eastern Serbia again.
1829. Another Jedren Peace Treaty signed between
Russia and Turkey included Ottoman
obligation to “return the snatched areas to
Serbia”, which included Ti moč ka kra ji na.
1830. Awaiting liberation of Zaječar from
Turks, the first secular school was opened in
the city, located in a thatch, with one class.
The first teacher was Sa va Jo va no vić, the second
Pa ja Živ ko vić.
1833. On April twentieth, Prince Mi loš Obreno
vić gave the order that people of Eastern
Serbia should join the rebellion. Liberation of
the entire region and its annexation to Serbia
would be completed in May. On May 24,
Por ta recognized the condition established
through insurrection (which it should have
done earlier, on the basis of signed provisions
of the Jedren Peace Treaty from 1829, but it
violated its contracted obligations).
1834. The Eparchy of Timok within Serbian
Orthodox Church was established. Do si tej
(No va ko vić) was consecrated as the first bishop,
on Sretenje, and he would remain on this
position for the next 20 years.
1835. Former first Zaječar private school,
which was meanwhile reorganized into municipal
school, now becomes “pra vi telj stve na”
