Guardians of the Seal
“This one makes you look like a peacock in display,” her mum teased.
Imani made faces at her before going back in to change the dress. While she
was gone, Tara turned to Lucan and asked suddenly, “What do you think of
the Wicket Gate?”
Lucan hesitated. He had been able to deduce that Imani didn't believe in
the Wicket Gate and was unsure if she got that disbelief from her mother or
otherwise. He would tread carefully. “It only appears to those who believe it
is,” he responded, hand on chin.
Tara leaned forward and looked him in the eye. “Do you believe, Lucan?”
Lucan held her gaze and said in almost a whisper, “I believe.” Tara kept her
eyes on him for a few more seconds, as if probing his sincerity, and then,
satisfied, she sat back into the chair.
Imani came out in a fitted silver dress, flowing like a goddess. “Mum, could
you help me with the zipper, please,” she asked, turning her back to her mum.
Tara gave Lucan a knowing look and said with meaning, “Help her.”
