Lamela was tired of waiting for Tara to wake up. She went to open the<br />
curtains that ran from the ceiling all the way down and let the sunlight in<br />
directly on Tara. In no time, Tara began to stir. She was fully awake a few<br />
moments later.<br />
“Did Maxwell make it?” she asked. Above all things, she wanted to<br />
know if she was free of him.<br />
“No,” Lamela responded.<br />
“And the police? Have they come to ask any questions?” Tara asked<br />
further.<br />
Lamela smiled. “They will not be asking any questions.”<br />
Tara relaxed. He was gone. Then she remembered something. Lamela<br />
anticipated her question and shook her head.<br />
Lamela climbed into the bed beside her and comforted her as Tara<br />
broke into quiet sobs. “He killed my baby. That demon killed my baby,”<br />
Tara wailed. Lamela smiled at how accurate Tara's unwitting description<br />
of Maxwell was. “Life has been so cruel to me. Why do bad things keep<br />
happening to me?” Tara's voice got louder.<br />
“Life? Life you say?” Lamela was incredulous. She turned Tara around<br />
so that their faces were within inches of each other. “You are still refusing<br />
to face reality even when it stares you in the face? It is not life that has dealt<br />
you cruel blows. No, it is not. It is men. They are the cause of every<br />
problem we women have.” She got up to pour herself a glass of Whiskey<br />
and took a sip before continuing.<br />
“Think about it. Your father. Your husband. Every pain all the women<br />
you know have experienced have been caused by the men in their lives. I<br />
don't have such problems in my life. Simple reason, I do not have any men<br />
in my life. Why do you think everyone at the lab is a woman?”<br />
Tara struggled to form thoughts to refute what Lamela was saying, but<br />
