beyond them to withhold their help out of spite just to make him fail.
Satisfied, he plunged the knife into his own heart.
Across the room, Tony watched in amazement as Karis stabbed
himself and fell on the table lifeless. But even as he touched the table, he
saw a being emerge from the body - one lovelier than his own
companion. The new Karis emanated light and power, and his clothes
had been transformed into radiant armor. He held a glowing sword in
hand, and white wings unfurled on his back. He glanced in Tony's
direction and a wave of beautiful emotions like nothing he had ever felt
before washed over Tony. He heard Karis' voice as if coming from within.
“This is what you can become. If you are willing to make the sacrifice,”
then he rose into the ceiling and was gone.
Karis rose out of the building to meet Nimrod.
“Are you not done playing angel of light?” Nimrod asked
Instantly, Karis' lovely form disappeared. In its place, a man-sized
spider stood.
“Better. Your time here is done. Wait for me before going to report to
Lucifer on your return. You know better than to try to double-cross me
and disobey. Be gone.”
With that, Karis vanished, leaving only wisps of smoke where he had
been.
“Now, let us see if you are right and that one is truly a Guardian”.
