him. She heard him shut the door. And then she heard him lock it. Her<br />
heart nearly jumped out of her mouth.<br />
He could feel her fear. He liked the feeling of making her this afraid. He<br />
took his time to turn around, savouring it. Then he strode to the couch<br />
and sat in it, watching as she waited for him to say something. “Sit down”<br />
he said.<br />
She slowly let herself into the chair opposite him, putting the table<br />
between them.<br />
“When were you going to tell me?” he asked.<br />
Tara felt her heart quicken. “Tell you what?” she asked weakly.<br />
“Oh, so we answer questions with questions now eh?” he said, raising<br />
his eyebrow.<br />
“Oh no, I didn't mean it that way,” she said apologetically. Inside, she<br />
felt her disgust with herself rising. She was apologizing again for nothing.<br />
She had despised her mother for being too weak to leave her father. But<br />
here she was, in the same position, financially independent of her<br />
husband, yet she did not leave.<br />
“That baby you are carrying is not mine. Of course you couldn't tell me<br />
you were pregnant because you knew it.” Then he stood up, went around<br />
the table and stood in front of her. “Start talking” he whispered.<br />
“It's not what you think. I didn't do anything wrong. I don't even know<br />
the father.” She knew she was sounding disjointed but she kept talking. A<br />
slap silenced her.<br />
“So you had immaculate conception? How don't you know the father?<br />
You will tell me who the bastard is. And here's what I'm going to do. I will<br />
kill you first. And then I will go and kill him. That will teach you not to<br />
cheat on me”.<br />
She flew into full panic mode. It was finally happening. He was going<br />
to kill her and her baby. Her eyes darted all over the room, searching for a<br />
way of escape. He was blocking the only way. Except she could get across<br />
