moazzam malik is director for<br />

western asia and Stabilisation<br />

at the Uk department for<br />

international development<br />

(dfid). he oversees the Uk<br />

Government’s development<br />

partnerships in afghanistan,<br />

pakistan, tajikistan, kyrgyzstan<br />

and stabilisation assistance to<br />

address conflict and insecurity<br />

in developing countries.<br />

moazzam leads a division<br />

comprising over 300 staff and<br />

a budget of almost £500m spread across five<br />

departments: dfid afghanistan, dfid pakistan,<br />

dfid central asia, the Uk Stabilisation Unit, and the<br />

director’s office in london.<br />

Before taking up responsibilities in this area,<br />

moazzam was director for Un, conflict and<br />

humanitarian issues. he managed the Uk’s<br />

relationship with the Un development system and<br />

oversaw major Uk humanitarian operations.<br />

moazzam previously led work on the 2006 white<br />

paper on international development ‘making<br />

Governance work for the poor’. Between 2003 and<br />

2005, moazzam was principal private Secretary to<br />

first Baroness amos and then the right hon hilary<br />

Benn mp, Secretary of State for international<br />

development. as principal private Secretary,<br />

moazzam worked with ministers and colleagues<br />

across Government on a wide range of issues<br />

including the Uk’s assistance in africa and South asia;<br />

migration and trade policy; reform of international<br />

institutions; and the G8 Summit at Gleneagles. earlier<br />

in his dfid career, moazzam managed dfid’s<br />

programmes in pakistan, iraq and on trade policy.<br />

moazzam is on the advisory Board to the Uk all<br />

party parliamentary Group on conflict, sits on the<br />

Board of Goodweave Uk, and was previously a<br />

member of the Un Secretary General’s advisory<br />

Group on the central emergency revolving fund.<br />

outside Government, moazzam has worked as a<br />

consultant economist advising large Uk corporate<br />

clients and the world Bank amongst others; a<br />

researcher at the london School of economics and<br />

the overseas development institute; an adviser on<br />

monetary and foreign exchange policy in the central<br />

Bank of Uganda; an economist in a pakistani<br />

development bank; and run a production engineering<br />

business and an urban regeneration nGo based in<br />

london.<br />

MOHAMMED JAWAD<br />

surgeon<br />

mr mohammad Jawad, a pioneering reconstructive and<br />

cosmetic surgeon was catapulted to fame in 2009 when a<br />

channel 4 documentary ‘my Beautiful face’ aired. mr Jawad’s<br />

work with acid burns victims continued in pakistan, where he<br />

uses his skills to to treat survivors of radically disfiguring acid<br />

attacks, the majority of whom are women targeted by family<br />

members. in 2011-12 the oscar winning documentary, Saving<br />

face chronicled his work there. his work for burns and acid<br />

victims in pakistan has seen him recognised at Buckingham<br />

palace.<br />

in 2005 mr Jawad led a surgical team to offer expertise from the<br />

Uk to victims of the earthquake in pakistan. they established a<br />

clinical facility carrying out reconstructive procedures for limb<br />

salvaging on approximately 25 patients per day for 7 weeks.<br />

Simultaneous training of the al-Shifa medical staff members was<br />

an added long-term bonus to the country.<br />

he was awarded the Star of pakistan in 2009, for a project led<br />

by him where a team of plastic surgeons went to indus hospital,<br />

karachi to operate on children with cleft lips and palates and<br />

burns victims, including training of local plastic surgeons.<br />

mr Jawad qualified from dow medical college, pakistan, before<br />

completing a cosmetic Surgery fellowship in london and<br />

further training in the USa, italy, france, Belgium and turkey<br />

before launching his career in the Uk.<br />

he has held eminent posts throughout the Uk, including<br />

extensive work with children, incl. at the chelsea and<br />

westminster hospital in london, as consultant plastic,<br />

reconstructive and Burns Surgeon, and honorary clinical<br />

Senior lecturer at the University of london.<br />
