Being an entrepreneur, he first successfully sold a co-owned technology business to a subsidiary of carphone warehouse in 2007, before starting a global business in refrigeration which he sold in may 2012. he has helped setup more than 500 businesses and has been recognised for numerous awards over the past few years including hSBc business of the year, national Start-ups top100 companies and Green business of the year finalist to name a few. whilst azhar himself has been nominated as one of the Uk’s top young entrepreneurs by ‘Growing Business’. azhar is extremely passionate about enterprise and supporting the next generation of young entrepreneurs. recently he has launched a self-funded program which looks at the broader issue of ‘neets’. the personal investment of £25,000 will go into ideas generated from young individuals aged 16 to 24. azhar is a registered chartered architect, and has practiced architecture internationally for 20 years including europe, asia, middle east and africa, as well as extensive experience in the Uk. azhar was born in the ancient city of lahore, he grew up in london. he was educated at University college london in Bloomsbury. he is a proud londoner and is passionate about the built environment, inspired by the past, and optimistic about the invention of the future azhar is a director of conran and partners, architects designers, which is part of conran holdings, founded by Sir terence conran. the practice works internationally on high quality projects from masterplanning to individual projects. he trained in architecture at the prestigious Bartlett School of architecture, University college of london, and has taught and lectured widely, at undergraduate and post-graduate levels including, University college london, national college of art lahore, chinese University hong kong, westminster University, middlesex University, Greenwich University and the kent School of architecture. at the kent School of architecture he was co-running the march (pt ii) architecture course at kSa- University of kent, the projects dealt with thames Gateway and olympic issues. 82
FINAL POWER 100 BOOK 2.59 TUE_Layout 1 14/02/2017 13:55 Page 83 BILAWAL BHUTTO ZARDARI Politics Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was born on 21 September 1988. he is the son of asif ali Zardari and Benazir Bhutto. he was three months old when his mother first became prime minister. Bilawal was admitted in the prestigious aitichison college lahore, but due to some security problems he could not continue. instead he went to karachi Grammar School during his mother’s second term in office as prime minister. he also attended froebel’s international School in islamabad. he left pakistan with his mother in april 1999. he spent his childhood in dubai and london during his family’s self-exile. he later attended rashid School for Boys in dubai, where he was Vice president of the student council. he has a black belt in taekwondo but regrets he could not play cricket because of his family circumstances. Bilawal matriculated at christ church, a constituent college of the University of oxford, in mid-2007, to study modern history, studying British history before transitioning to general history. Benazir also enrolled him in the oxford Union debating society. in december 2007, he returned to pakistan after Benazir was assassinated. he also returned to pakistan in September 2008 to witness Bilawal was appointed chairman of the PPP on 30 December 2007. Asif Zardari also announced Bilawal’s name change from “Bilawal Zardari” to “Bilawal Bhutto Zardari” his father sworn in as president of pakistan. Bilawal completed his studies in June 2010. after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, Benazir’s political will declared asif ali Zardari as Benazir’s successor for party leadership. however, Bilawal became chairman of the pakistan peoples party because Zardari favoured Bilawal to represent Bhutto’s legacy in part to avoid division within the party due to Zardari’s own unpopularity. Zardari planned to act as co-chairman of the ppp for at least three years until Bilawal completed his studies overseas. 83
