Notes on Contributors Dr. John Coolahan is Emeritus Professor of Education at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. He has lectured extensively in Ireland and abroad, is author of three books, has published over 120 articles in Irish and international journals, and has edited several educational publications. Professor Coolahan has had extensive involvement in a public service capacity as an adviser on educational policy in Ireland. At international level, he has been a consultant on education to the EU Commission, the Council of Europe, the World Bank and the OECD. He has recently chaired the National Forum on School Patronage and Pluralism, and is Chairman of the Implementation Group for the Arts in Education Charter. Dr. Sheelagh Drudy is Emeritus Professor of Education and former Head of the School of Education at UCD. She has been a teacher educator for many years at NUIM and UCD and was previously a second level teacher. She has published books and articles on the sociology of education. She has been involved in educational policy development, having served on a variety of national and international bodies. She is a former Research Fellow and Visiting Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge. She was a member of the first Teaching Council and currently serves as a member of the Council of the National Council for Special Education. Dr. Pádraig Hogan is Senior Lecturer in Education at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He has a keen research interest in the quality of educational experience and in what makes learning environments conducive to fruitful learning. Since 2003, he has led the research and development programme ‘Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century’. This programme currently involves the university with eleven Education Centres, Dublin & Dún Laoghaire ETB and over 70 second-level schools. To date, he has published over 100 research items, including books, journal articles, book chapters and commissioned pieces. His most recent book is The New Significance of Learning: Imagination's Heartwork. Dr Áine Hyland is Emeritus Professor of Education and former Vice-President of University College Cork, Ireland. She has been active in education circles in Ireland and internationally for over 50 years. She started her career as a civil servant in the Department of Education, and was a secondary teacher in the 1970s. Since 1980, she has been involved in teacher education – in Carysfort College, University College Dublin and subsequently as Professor of Education in University College Cork. She has been a member of various education boards and has published books and articles on the history of Irish education, educational policy, educational disadvantage and curriculum and examinations. Dr. Séamus McGuinness is a former Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, Trinity College, Dublin. He served as a member of the Secretariat of the National Education Convention and as chair of a number of Department of Education committees, including The Technical Group on the Establishment of the Teaching Council, The Expert Group on the Allocation of Teachers to Post-Primary Schools, The Education Sector Performance Verification Group (ESPVG). He is currently chair of the New Schools Establishment Group. He has also worked as a consultant for a number of national and international organisations in the areas of system and programme evaluations and has co-authored a range of related reports. — iii —
