A large portion of Darwin’s handwritten manuscripts are housed in this<br />

library. Some highlights include Darwin’s religious views written for<br />

his autobiography; proofs of the sixth edition of The Origin of Species;<br />

Darwin’s room while he attended Christ’s College is Number 6. The College<br />

has left the room exactly as it was when Darwin occupied it; special<br />

Darwin’s home (and estate) for forty years is maintained by English<br />

Heritage. Usually, there is an exhibition about the Beagle voyage and<br />

about some aspect of Darwin’s home life. The study, dining room, and<br />

drawing room look as they did during Darwin’s life. Definitely worth<br />

Features portraits of most of the well-known Victorian figures. Has several<br />

portraits and prints of Darwin, including a replica of the last portrait<br />

painted by John Collier (1850–1934) in 1883—the original is in<br />

The museum was the brainchild of the distinguished scientist Richard<br />

Owen, the first director. The marble statue of Darwin presented to<br />

Prince Edward in 1885 by the Royal Society is in this museum. The<br />

Darwin Center houses some of the specimens Darwin collected on his<br />

The town where Darwin was born and spent his childhood. By following<br />

the Darwin Trail, a mapped walk around the town, it is possible<br />

to see most of the major sites associated with Darwin’s early life:<br />

St. Chad’s, the church where Darwin was christened; the home of Reverend<br />

Case, Darwin’s first school; the Unitarian Church Darwin attended<br />

with his mother; the building where Robert Darwin practiced; and the
