Loki, and in the evenincr they came to a conntryman^s<br />

house. The goats were killed and boiled, and Thor in-<br />

\-ited the countrj-man and his wife, his son Thialfi, and his<br />

daughter Pioskva to partake of the repast; and desired<br />

them to throw the bones iato the croat-skiQS, which he<br />

had laid by the side of the hearth. But Thialfi broke a<br />

thigh-bone, in order to get at the marrow.<br />

Thor remained<br />

there during the night, rose at dawn, raised Miolmr on<br />

high, consecrated the goat-skins with it, and the goats<br />

sprang up, but one was lame of a hind-leg. He called to<br />

the countryman, who was ready to sink on seeing the<br />

angr\- brow of the god, and his knuckles white with<br />

clenching the haft of Miolnir. Both the man and his<br />

famdy sued for pardod, and offered to give all they possessed,<br />

in compensation for the misfortune. Thor seeing<br />

them thus terrified, mitigated his anger, and contented<br />

himself with taking Thialfi and Roskva as his servants,<br />

who attended him ever after. Leading the goats behind,<br />

he resolved on proceediag eastward to Jotunheim, in the<br />

direction of the sea, which he crossed, accompanied by<br />

Loki, Thialfi, and Boskva. After travelling a short distance<br />

they came to a vast forest, in which they journeyed<br />

the whole day till dark; Thialfi, who of all men was<br />

swiftest of foot, bearing Thor's wallet, though provisions<br />

to fill it were not easily to be had. Looking now on all<br />

sides for a place wherein to pass the night, they found a<br />

very spacious house, with a door at one end as broad as<br />

the house itself. They entered, and betook themselves to<br />

rest ; but at midnight the earth shook under them, and<br />

the house ti-embled. Thor arose and called to his companions.<br />

Groping their way, they found a chamber on<br />

the right, which they entered, but Thor set himself in the<br />

door-way ^ith hammer in hand. Those within were much<br />

terrified, for they heard a great din and crash. At dawn<br />
