LEADERS GOOD SENSE
GUIDELINES
1. NEVER BE IN A CONDOMINIUM OR BEDROOM ALONE WITH
A STUDENT. Do your interviews outside in a public location (on the
beach).
2. Men minister with boys, women minister with girls. If a student
of the opposite sex seeks your counsel, take them to a leader of the
same sex.
3. Do not use any type of physical punishment under any
circumstances.
4. When in the pool or hot tub, avoid any physical contact with
students that might be misconstrued by others.
5. Do not behave toward a student of the opposite sex in a way
that could be seen as flirting. Avoid all physical contact with the
opposite sex.
6. Do not represent yourself as a “counselor.” You are a caring adult
who is willing to listen and pray with students, but don’t allow them
to mistakenly believe that you are a professionally licensed counselor/
psychologist.
7. Do not in any way tease, prank or joke with students who are
changing clothes or entering/exiting the shower. Adults should not
use “toilet” or gross humor.
8. Do not appear in the sight of students at any time when
undressed. When changing clothes or swimsuits, make sure the door
to your room is closed and that no students are present or can see
you. In other words, students should never see you undressed; change
clothing in private!
9. Never share a bed with a student under any circumstances. It
might be necessary to sleep on one of the twin beds or couch and let
the students have the master bedroom.
10. When interviewing students, all situations involving physical abuse,
sexual abuse, suicidal struggles, chemical dependency or eating
disorders should be brought to the attention of your youth pastor as
soon as possible.
