LIFE GUARD
DUTIES
• The Beach Safety Captain is responsible for overseeing
and organizing the beach lifeguards. The Captain is
responsible, with the help of other lifeguards, in seeing
that the following items get to the beach 30 minutes
before free time: sunscreen, a bullhorn, nametag board,
buoys, and rescue tubes.
• The Beach Safety Captain assigns lifeguards to the
following tasks:
Swimmers - Four lifeguards will go into the water
and station themselves on the border of the swimming
area, looking for anyone in trouble. Three of the
lifeguards will be on the perimeter of the swim area,
and one lifeguard will be in the middle of the swim
area.
POOL DUTY
• Never lay down in a horizontal position to catch rays
while on duty!
• No rough play near the edges of the pool. No diving
into the pool. Absolutely no one (leaders included) is
allowed to push, pull or throw anyone into the pool.
• Watch for sunburn. Students looking red should put on
sunscreen or a T-shirt.
• Help the students be considerate of other guests. We
need to avoid “overtaking” all of the pools or being
rambunctious with little children around.
• Pool volunteers will all wear BR volunteer T-shirts so
they can be easily recognized in the crowd. (Pick up
your shirt at the volunteer tent.)
Taggers - Two leaders will stay at the nametag
board checking buddies in and out, as well as keeping
a count of nametags at all times.
Counters - Have one counter look for students
coming out of the water and remind them to remove
their nametags from the board immediately. This person
may assist the taggers as well when the lines get long.
• The beach opens each day promptly at 1:00PM.
Please arrive for lifeguard duty 30 minutes early.
• Do not interview while you are on lifeguard duty.
You are responsible for the lives of the students when
you are on duty. Some students weigh less than 75
pounds and could easily be knocked down or pulled
under by a wave. Stay focused on your responsibility.
A slight delay in time could make the critical
difference in an emergency situation.
