LIFE GUARD<br />

DUTIES<br />

• The <strong>Beach</strong> Safety Captain is responsible for overseeing<br />

and organizing the beach lifeguards. The Captain is<br />

responsible, with the help of other lifeguards, in seeing<br />

that the following items get to the beach 30 minutes<br />

before free time: sunscreen, a bullhorn, nametag board,<br />

buoys, and rescue tubes.<br />

• The <strong>Beach</strong> Safety Captain assigns lifeguards to the<br />

following tasks:<br />

Swimmers - Four lifeguards will go into the water<br />

and station themselves on the border of the swimming<br />

area, looking for anyone in trouble. Three of the<br />

lifeguards will be on the perimeter of the swim area,<br />

and one lifeguard will be in the middle of the swim<br />

area.<br />

POOL DUTY<br />

• Never lay down in a horizontal position to catch rays<br />

while on duty!<br />

• No rough play near the edges of the pool. No diving<br />

into the pool. Absolutely no one (leaders included) is<br />

allowed to push, pull or throw anyone into the pool.<br />

• Watch for sunburn. Students looking red should put on<br />

sunscreen or a T-shirt.<br />

• Help the students be considerate of other guests. We<br />

need to avoid “overtaking” all of the pools or being<br />

rambunctious with little children around.<br />

• Pool volunteers will all wear BR volunteer T-shirts so<br />

they can be easily recognized in the crowd. (Pick up<br />

your shirt at the volunteer tent.)<br />

Taggers - Two leaders will stay at the nametag<br />

board checking buddies in and out, as well as keeping<br />

a count of nametags at all times.<br />

Counters - Have one counter look for students<br />

coming out of the water and remind them to remove<br />

their nametags from the board immediately. This person<br />

may assist the taggers as well when the lines get long.<br />

• The beach opens each day promptly at 1:00PM.<br />

Please arrive for lifeguard duty 30 minutes early.<br />

• Do not interview while you are on lifeguard duty.<br />

You are responsible for the lives of the students when<br />

you are on duty. Some students weigh less than 75<br />

pounds and could easily be knocked down or pulled<br />

under by a wave. Stay focused on your responsibility.<br />

A slight delay in time could make the critical<br />

difference in an emergency situation.<br />
