PORNOGRAPHY - when a student shares with
you that they view pornography...
Empathize:
Offer support:
I appreciate that you feel comfortable to share
this with me. It can be a tough subject to talk
about at times. Tell me about how this is a
problem for you.
I care about what images go into your mind,
because I know that they affect your heart,
mind and spirit.
• Make it clear that you believe in them as a
person of great value to the Lord.
• Convey that you are concerned about the
effect the images have on them and would
like to help them get help.
Philippians 4:8
Focus on things that are honorable, pure,
lovely, commendable and praiseworthy.
Psalm 119:37
Turning eyes away from worthless
things to preserve one’s life according to
God’s instruction.
2 Timothy 2:21-22; Galatians 6:1-2
Seek accountability with those who
have maturity in this area.
1 Corinthians 10:13
God is faithful. With the temptation
there is a way of escape as well.
PHYSICAL/SEXUAL ABUSE - When a student reports
to you that someone has physically or sexually abused them...
Empathize:
That must have really taken a lot of courage to tell me.
Thank you so much for telling me that this is going
on in your life. It must be a painful thing to talk about.
• Let the student know honestly and directly that a
report must be made to Beach Retreat leadership.
• Reinforce to the student that you are going to
report because you care about their safety and
well-being.
• Explore how the student feels about revealing the
abuse and offer comfort to them.
• Listen carefully to the specific details of the abuse
Dispel Myths:
so that you have concrete information to report.
Sometimes people think that once the police know
of someone being abused, they (the police) come
to the door of the house and take away the person
who has been accused. This rarely happens. Most
often, an official will come and ask questions to
make sure that you are safe.
Psalm 37:39-40
Others may fail us, but God will always
stand by us.
Psalm 139:7-10; Psalm 46:1;
Psalm 142:3-6
God is always present, even when we
feel alone.
TAKE ACTION:
Report ANY physical or sexual abuse to an authority in headquarters immediately!
Do not wait to make a report, even if the student tells you that the abuse is no longer
happening. Once a student tells you that they are at risk, you have a very short time
frame in which to pass on the information. If, for some reason, you choose to delay, or
decide not to make a report to authorities, You are legally liable for that student!
