We excluded studies of condition-specific organised care (e.g.<br />

Stroke units, Geriatric Orthopaedic Rehabilitation) (Handoll<br />

2009; SUTC 2007). We excluded studies that did not evaluate<br />

comprehensive <strong>geriatric</strong> <strong>assessment</strong> in an inpatient setting.<br />

Types of outcome measures<br />

Primary outcome measure<br />

• Living at home; which is the inverse of death or<br />

institutionalisation combined and describes the odds of someone<br />

being alive and in their own home at a point in time.<br />

Secondary outcome measures<br />

• Activities of daily living<br />

Search methods <strong>for</strong> identification of studies<br />

We reviewed the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation<br />

of Care (EPOC) Group Register and the database of studies<br />

awaiting <strong>assessment</strong>. We searched the Cochrane Central Register<br />

of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library) (April<br />

2010) and checked the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects<br />

(DARE) (latest issue) <strong>for</strong> relevant reviews and reviewed their reference<br />

lists. We also searched the following bibliographic databases:<br />

MEDLINE (from 1966 <strong>to</strong> April 2010); EMBASE (from 1980 <strong>to</strong><br />

April 2010); CINAHL (from 1982 <strong>to</strong> April 2010); (ACP) and<br />
