punishment. In the “Register <strong>of</strong> men tried and<br />

punished or pardoned,” kept by our then military<br />

friend, we find nothing more severe inflicted, by<br />

any court martial <strong>of</strong> which “Capt. <strong>Miller</strong>” was<br />

“President,” than this: “S- P-, Private. Jan. 20,<br />

1815. Regt. C. Martial. Crime: disobedience <strong>of</strong><br />

orders, neglect <strong>of</strong> duty, and stealing. Sentence: to<br />

be ducked in the lake, picketed two hours, and have<br />

his whiskey rations stopped sixty days.” Rather a<br />

hard sentence for January!<br />

In prosecuting the business designated in the<br />

following “Order” <strong>of</strong> General Macomb, he<br />

probably had an opportunity to make a flying visit<br />

to Poultney:<br />

“Head-quarters, Plattsburgh, 3rd February,<br />

1815.<br />

“Orders. -- Capt. <strong>Miller</strong>, <strong>of</strong> the 30th Regt., will<br />

proceed immediately to Whitehall, and procure<br />

clothing for the requisition <strong>of</strong> the commanding<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> his regt.<br />
