away with a great noise, and the elements shall<br />

melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works<br />

that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing, then,<br />

that all these things shall be dissolved, what<br />

manner <strong>of</strong> persons ought ye to be in all holy<br />

conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting<br />

unto the coming <strong>of</strong> the day <strong>of</strong> God, wherein the<br />

heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the<br />

elements shall melt with fervent heat!<br />

Nevertheless, we, according to his promise, look<br />

for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth<br />

righteousness.’ (2 Peter 3:10-13) The coming <strong>of</strong><br />

Christ is here spoken <strong>of</strong>, the passing away <strong>of</strong> the<br />

heavens, the melting <strong>of</strong> the elements, the burning<br />

up <strong>of</strong> the works <strong>of</strong> men, and the new heavens and<br />

new earth, as promised.<br />

“Where is that promise? Some say it is in<br />

(Isaiah 65:17). But that cannot be the original<br />

promise to which Peter alludes; it can only be a<br />

repetition <strong>of</strong> the promise to our fathers. ‘For the<br />

promise that he should be the heir <strong>of</strong> the world was<br />

not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but<br />

through the righteousness <strong>of</strong> faith. For if they<br />
