On the same occasion, he adds: “I am more and<br />

more astonished at the harmony and strength <strong>of</strong> the<br />

word <strong>of</strong> God; and the more I read, the more I see<br />

the folly <strong>of</strong> the infidel in rejecting this word.”<br />

The articles referred to were sent as anonymous<br />

to the editor <strong>of</strong> the Telegraph, who declined their<br />

publication unless informed <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> the<br />

writer. This being communicated to him, they<br />

appeared, in a series <strong>of</strong> sixteen articles, over the<br />

initials <strong>of</strong> W. M. The first article was published in<br />

the paper <strong>of</strong> May 15, 1832, and they caused much<br />

conversation and discussion.<br />

Soon after this, he addressed another letter to<br />

Elder Hendryx, which is so quaintly written,<br />

contains so much <strong>of</strong> general interest, and is so<br />

illustrative <strong>of</strong> his habits <strong>of</strong> thought and modes <strong>of</strong><br />

expression, that it is here given:<br />

“Hampton, March 26th, 1832.<br />

“Dear Bro. Hendryx: -- I received your favor <strong>of</strong><br />

the 19th inst. day before yesterday, and should<br />
