“We must not forget to mention that Emanor<br />

was pious. His was not that ostentatious piety<br />

which says, ‘Stand by thyself ’ -- ‘I am more holy<br />

than thou;’ nor that sectarian piety which<br />

denounces all that will not ‘follow us.’ No, my<br />

kind reader, he had not that dogmatical piety which<br />

lords it over fellow-worshippers, and says, ‘This<br />

you must do, and that you may leave undone; you<br />

must support this improvement, that institution, or<br />

join such a social compact, or we can have no<br />

fellowship with you as Christians. You must<br />

forbear to eat or drink any <strong>of</strong> the good things <strong>of</strong><br />

life, if your masters say forbear.’ Neither had he<br />

that proud, scholastic piety, which knows no<br />

greater depths than the wisdom <strong>of</strong> man, supported<br />

by vain philosophy, and has no higher motive than<br />

self-aggrandizement at the expense <strong>of</strong> others. No,<br />

his piety was that <strong>of</strong> the heart, founded on the first<br />

grand principle <strong>of</strong> his Father’s kingdom, namely, to<br />

‘love God with all the heart, and our neighbor as<br />

ourselves.’ It manifested itself in his constant, daily<br />

submission to the commands and dealings <strong>of</strong> God,<br />

and in diligently inquiring after and relieving the<br />

wants <strong>of</strong> his fellow-creatures. ‘He went about<br />
