while thus continually violating his own creed, he<br />

has surely no right to oblige all others to submit to<br />

“Those who cry the loudest against creeds, and<br />

disclaim the strongest, are the very men who<br />

require others to submit to their ipse dixit. They<br />

require the largest liberty for themselves, and allow<br />

the least to others. And if others are not ready to<br />

comply with their fancies, ever varying as they are,<br />

they are ready to consign them to perdition. For<br />

shame on such absurd inconsistencies!<br />

“The aim <strong>of</strong> all our writings has been to show<br />

the church and the world what we believe to be the<br />

great truths the Bible inculcates. We have had a<br />

right so to do. These truths have had a mighty<br />

influence on the community. To bring discredit on<br />

them, and thus to weaken our labors, the adversary<br />

has connected with them, in the mind <strong>of</strong> the public,<br />

various odious extravagances. When we, therefore,<br />

set ourselves up as teachers, all have a right to<br />

demand <strong>of</strong> us what we believe, and what we teach.<br />
