ADHD
(Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
(Carla Budd)
Have you just been told that your child may have
ADHD? ADHD is defined as a neurodevelopment
disorder that contributes to hyperactivity,
impulsiveness, and an inability to focus in those
diagnosed with it. It is the top mental health disorder
for children in Canada, affecting 5% of school age
children from 5-12.
Although there’s no single cause identified, ADHD could be a result of the following:
Genetics
Environment (lead exposure)
Maternal use of drugs (alcohol, tobacco)
Brain trauma/injuries
Developmental delay in brain/neurochemical imbalance
Because ADHD symptoms can be mistaken for other disorders, it is difficult to diagnosis
and can cause stress for families.
Below are informational resources for public and private ADHD services that provide
diagnosis and treatment, and non-medical alternatives like counseling, education, and
support groups.
