Anxiety & Stress
(Carla Budd)
If you’ve just been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder,
you’re not alone. Anxiety is very common and is defined
as “a chronic fear that persists in the absence of any direct
threat,”, and becomes a disorder once it interferes with
functioning in daily life.
Four types of anxiety include: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, Agoraphobia (fear of
public places) and Panic Disorders, (Pinel, 2018) and is twice as common in women than men.
According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of Canada, “one in four Canadians (25%) will
have at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime,” and in 2013 anxiety affected 3 million
Canadians, or 11.6% of the population over 18.
Definite causes of anxiety are unknown but may include:
Genetics
Environmental factors: work, school, relationships, home
Nutritional deficits, neurochemical imbalances
Substance abuse
Trauma
Research shows that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most effective treatments
for anxiety. (Kaczkurkin, 2015). Discover resources for CBT and other information as you
educate yourself about what you can do and who is there to help.
