Graftek Imaging’s Web site has a “lens selector.” You can specify lens parameters, and it will not only Þnd all possible matches within their product range, but also display possible compatible products for comparison (Figure 2.27). FIGURE 2.27 The Graftek lens selector Website. 2.4 LIGHTING Lighting is an important, yet often overlooked facet of image acquisition — lighting can make or break your system. Some system integrators have been known to consider the industrial lighting solution a low-priority task, to be quickly decided

Although this approach can be fruitful, selecting an appropriate lighting apparatus during the project deÞnition stage can drastically change the path of your development process. Selecting a different illumination solution, rather than investing in higher resolution detectors and imaging lenses, can improve often image quality. Although machine vision lighting hardware can come in many shapes and sizes, the most common types are area array, backlight, dark Þeld and ring and dome illuminators. Specialized types include cloudy day, diffuse on axis, collimated on axis and square continuous diffuse illuminators. 2.4.1 AREA ARRAYS Area array illuminators are by far the most common machine vision lighting devices, and are typically used on nonspecular surface objects with low reßection. The physical makeup of an area array is a matrix of small lights (often LEDs) covering a large area, thus creating a wide beam of light toward the object. The most common area array variants include spot and ßat area array sources (as shown in Figure 2.28). Area array sources are often the cheapest solution to general purpose light applications, and are especially useful when the light source is required to be some distance from the object (spot lighting). (b) Area array. 2.4.2 RING Ring illumination is a popular choice for applications that require coaxial lighting, and can produce uniform illumination when used at appropriate distances. As the ring can be placed around the viewing axis, the object is irradiated almost as though the light is projecting from or behind the camera itself (Figure 2.29). When used in this method, the resulting image generally has few shadows. Ring lighting is only useful when illuminating nonreßective surfaces, otherwise circular glare patterns are reßected (Figure 2.30).
