You need not use the IMAQ functions to load and display JPEG, PNG or BMP images; the LabVIEW Base Development System comes with VIs to accomplish this without installing the Vision Toolkit (Figure 4.9). Use the appropriate VI from the Graphics&Sound>GraphicsFormats function palette (Read JPG File, Read PNG File or Read BMP File) to return the Þle as ßattened image data, and then convert it to a picture using Draw Flattened Pixmap (Figure 4.10). Unfortunately, if the picture indicator is not the correct size, the image will either be clipped or will not Þll up the entire front panel object. This problem can be avoided by resizing the indicator to Þt the loaded image (Figure 4.12). Resizing

The picture indicator may become too large for the front panel, and even overlap other front panel objects, as shown above (Figure 4.11). You can also use this non-IMAQ Vision Toolkit technique to display images dynamically from Web addresses. A randomly chosen CRC Press Web page shows an image of a book cover, which can be displayed in a Picture indicator on a front panel (Figure 4.13). By using DataSocket Read, the raw ASCII text of the image Þle is read, and subsequently saved to a temporary text Þle on the local hard drive. Then using the techniques described earlier, the Þle is opened, and the unßattened data converted to a picture (Figure 4.14).
