monarch had allied himself, as we have already<br />
related, with <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn Protestant nations. Louis<br />
XIII disconnected himself from his fa<strong>the</strong>r's allies,<br />
and jo<strong>in</strong>ed himself <strong>to</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r's enemies, by <strong>the</strong><br />
project <strong>of</strong> a double marriage; for while he solicited<br />
for himself <strong>the</strong> hand <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spanish Infanta, he<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered his sister <strong>in</strong> marriage <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Asturias. This boded <strong>the</strong> ascendency <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> and<br />
<strong>of</strong> Rome once more <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong> – <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>of</strong><br />
persecution and war. S<strong>in</strong>ister reports were<br />

importuned <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> forbid <strong>the</strong> Protestants from<br />
call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> question, by voice or by pen, <strong>the</strong><br />
authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope. He was<br />
solicited not <strong>to</strong> let <strong>the</strong>m open a school <strong>in</strong> any city,<br />
not <strong>to</strong> let any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>isters enter a hospital, or<br />
adm<strong>in</strong>ister religious consolation <strong>to</strong> any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
