10,000 refugees had died <strong>of</strong> starvation <strong>in</strong> England,<br />
and that <strong>of</strong> those who had fled, <strong>the</strong> vast majority<br />
were solicit<strong>in</strong>g permission <strong>to</strong> return. In va<strong>in</strong> were<br />
all <strong>the</strong>se efforts <strong>to</strong> check <strong>the</strong> emigration; danger<br />
was braved, vigilance was eluded; and <strong>the</strong> frontiers<br />
were crossed by an ever-enlarg<strong>in</strong>g crowd, who<br />
were even more anxious <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d liberty <strong>of</strong><br />
conscience than <strong>to</strong> escape from death.<br />
The devices resorted <strong>to</strong> and <strong>the</strong> disguises<br />
assumed by <strong>the</strong> fugitives <strong>to</strong> avoid detection were<br />
<strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite. Some attired <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> garb <strong>of</strong><br />
pilgrims, and with shallop and palmer-staff pursued<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir journey <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir much-wished-for shr<strong>in</strong>e -- a<br />
land <strong>of</strong> liberty. Some traveled as couriers; some as<br />
sports-men, carry<strong>in</strong>g a gun on <strong>the</strong>ir shoulder; some<br />
as peasants driv<strong>in</strong>g cattle; some affected <strong>to</strong> be<br />
porters, carry<strong>in</strong>g burdens; o<strong>the</strong>rs were attired <strong>in</strong><br />
footmen's liveries, and o<strong>the</strong>rs wore soldiers'<br />
uniforms. The rich <strong>in</strong> some cases hired guides,<br />
who, for sums vary<strong>in</strong>g from 1,000 <strong>to</strong> 6,000 livres,<br />
conducted <strong>the</strong>m across <strong>the</strong> frontier. The poor,<br />
