But perhaps <strong>the</strong> most extraord<strong>in</strong>ary means<br />
employed was <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> a fund for <strong>the</strong><br />
purchase <strong>of</strong> consciences. This fund was fed from<br />
<strong>the</strong> resources <strong>of</strong> vacant bishoprics, which were <strong>the</strong><br />
right <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crown, but which <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g now made<br />
over <strong>to</strong> this fund. In every case, when a see became<br />
vacant, a year's revenue was thus applied, but sees<br />
were <strong>of</strong>ten kept vacant for years that <strong>the</strong> fund for<br />
conversions: might pr<strong>of</strong>it <strong>the</strong>reby.<br />
Pellisson, by birth a Calv<strong>in</strong>ist, but who, hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
gone over <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's religion, from a convert<br />
became a zealous converter, presided over this<br />
fund. It was, <strong>in</strong> truth, a great mercantile<br />
establishment, organized accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> rules and<br />
wield<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>ery <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r mercantile<br />
establishments. It had its head <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong> Paris, and<br />
branch <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces. It had its staff <strong>of</strong><br />
clerks, its correspondents, its table <strong>of</strong> prices, its<br />
letters <strong>of</strong> credit, and its daily published lists <strong>of</strong><br />
articles purchased, <strong>the</strong>se articles be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bodies<br />
