The first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se four sem<strong>in</strong>aries, Montauban,<br />

was famous for <strong>the</strong> high <strong>to</strong>ne <strong>of</strong> its orthodoxy. It<br />

was a well <strong>of</strong> Calv<strong>in</strong>ism undefiled. It was not less<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guished for <strong>the</strong> em<strong>in</strong>ent talents <strong>of</strong> its teachers.<br />

Among o<strong>the</strong>rs, it boasted Daniel Chamier, a<br />

remarkable man, whose name was famous <strong>in</strong> his<br />

own day, and is not unknown <strong>in</strong> ours. Comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> sagacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> statesman with <strong>the</strong> erudition <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ologian, he had a chief hand <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Edict <strong>of</strong> Nantes. He was a dist<strong>in</strong>guished<br />

controversialist, and bore away <strong>the</strong> prize <strong>in</strong> a public<br />

discussion at Nimes with <strong>the</strong> confessor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Henry</strong><br />

<strong>IV</strong>. At <strong>the</strong> request <strong>of</strong> his brethren, he under<strong>to</strong>ok a<br />

refutation <strong>of</strong> Bellarm<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> ablest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Papal<br />

champions. This work, <strong>in</strong> four volumes, has<br />

received <strong>the</strong> praise <strong>of</strong> a modern German<br />

<strong>the</strong>ologian, Staudl<strong>in</strong>, for <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>res <strong>of</strong> knowledge its<br />

author displays, and <strong>the</strong> search<strong>in</strong>g criticism which<br />

he br<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong> bear upon <strong>the</strong> Popish system. The<br />

manner <strong>of</strong> his death was unusual. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> siege<br />

<strong>of</strong> Montauban (1621) he was sent <strong>to</strong> preach <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

soldiers on <strong>the</strong> walls, who had not been able <strong>to</strong><br />

attend church. As he mounted <strong>the</strong> ramparts, he was<br />
