The Protestants thought one o<strong>the</strong>r attempt<br />

ought <strong>to</strong> be made, though not by arms, <strong>to</strong> recover<br />

some little from <strong>the</strong> wreck <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir liberties. They<br />

and <strong>the</strong> poor Huguenots were visited with a yet<br />

heavier measure <strong>of</strong> vengeance. The dragonnades<br />

were extended <strong>to</strong> all <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

<strong>France</strong>. The Protestants fled <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> forests, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

deserts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cevennes, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Pyrenees.<br />
