moved through <strong>the</strong> streets. The houses were full <strong>of</strong><br />
dead, which <strong>the</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g had not strength <strong>to</strong> bury.<br />
Crowds <strong>of</strong> old women and children went out at <strong>the</strong><br />
gate, at times, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hope that <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
great misery might move <strong>the</strong>ir enemies <strong>to</strong> pity, or<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y might :f<strong>in</strong>d someth<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong><br />
assuage <strong>the</strong>ir hunger; but <strong>the</strong>y were dealt with as<br />
<strong>the</strong> caprice or cruelty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> besiegers prompted.<br />
Sometimes <strong>the</strong>y were strangled on gibbets, and<br />
sometimes <strong>the</strong>y were stripped naked and scourged<br />
back <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. Still no thought <strong>of</strong> a surrender<br />
was enterta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />
For more than a year had <strong>the</strong> Rochellois waited,<br />
if haply from any quarter -- <strong>the</strong> Protestants <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
countries, or <strong>the</strong>ir brethren <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces --<br />
deliverance might arise. In no quarter could <strong>the</strong>y<br />
descry sign or <strong>to</strong>ken <strong>of</strong> help; not a voice was raised<br />
<strong>to</strong> cheer, not a hand was stretched out <strong>to</strong> aid.<br />
Fifteen terrible months had passed over <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
Two-thirds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> population were dead. Of <strong>the</strong><br />
fight<strong>in</strong>g men not more than 150 rema<strong>in</strong>ed. Around<br />
