without confession and without <strong>the</strong> Sacrament <strong>of</strong><br />

extreme unction. His corpse was a th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>o vile <strong>to</strong><br />

rest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bosom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth -- it must rot above<br />

ground; it was exposed on <strong>the</strong> highway, or was<br />

flung <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> public sewer. The body <strong>of</strong> M. de<br />

Chevenix, a man illustrious for his learn<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

piety, was subjected <strong>to</strong> this <strong>in</strong>dignity. Dragged<br />

away on a hurdle, it was thrown upon a dung-hill.<br />

His friends came by night, and wrapp<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>en,<br />

bore it reverently on <strong>the</strong>ir shoulders, and buried it<br />

<strong>in</strong> a garden, giv<strong>in</strong>g vent <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sorrow, as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

lowered it slowly <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> its place <strong>of</strong> sepulture, by<br />

s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> seventy-n<strong>in</strong>th Psalm: "Save me, O<br />

Lord, for <strong>the</strong> waters are come <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> my soul."[4]<br />

While one clause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Act <strong>of</strong> Revocation<br />

made it death for <strong>the</strong> pas<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong>,<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r clause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same Act made it death for<br />

<strong>the</strong> layman <strong>to</strong> flee from it. The land was converted<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a vast prison. The frontiers were jealously<br />

guarded; sent<strong>in</strong>els were placed at aft <strong>the</strong> great<br />

outlets <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom; numerous spies kept watch<br />

at <strong>the</strong> seaports; <strong>of</strong>ficers patrolled <strong>the</strong> shore; and<br />

ships <strong>of</strong> war hovered <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>to</strong> prevent<br />
