The year after <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's accession (1611) <strong>the</strong><br />
Protestant nobles met at Saumur, and held one <strong>of</strong><br />
those political assemblies which <strong>the</strong>y had planned<br />
for <strong>the</strong> regulation <strong>of</strong> religious <strong>in</strong>terests after <strong>the</strong><br />
abjuration <strong>of</strong> <strong>Henry</strong> <strong>IV</strong>.<br />
The illustrious Duplessis-Mornay was elected<br />
president, and <strong>the</strong> famous Pas<strong>to</strong>r Chaumier was<br />
made vice-president. The convocation consisted <strong>of</strong><br />
seventy persons <strong>in</strong> all – noblemen, m<strong>in</strong>isters,<br />
delegates from <strong>the</strong> Tiers Etat, and deputies from<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wn <strong>of</strong> La Rochelle: <strong>in</strong> short, a Huguenot<br />
Parliament. The Government, though reluctantly,<br />
had granted permission for <strong>the</strong>ir meet<strong>in</strong>g; and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
chief bus<strong>in</strong>ess was <strong>to</strong> elect two deputies-general, <strong>to</strong><br />
be accepted by <strong>the</strong> court as <strong>the</strong> recognized heads <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Protestant body. The assembly met. They<br />
refused simply <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>scribe two names <strong>in</strong> a bullet<strong>in</strong><br />
and break up as <strong>the</strong> court wished; <strong>the</strong>y sat four<br />
months, discussed <strong>the</strong> matters affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
<strong>in</strong>terests as Protestants, and asked <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
