<strong>the</strong> French Protestants drawn more strongly <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

which separated <strong>the</strong>ir action as citizens from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

action as church members – <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words, given<br />

more prom<strong>in</strong>ence <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir church organization. The<br />

<strong>the</strong>ory which <strong>the</strong>y had received from Calv<strong>in</strong>, and<br />

on which <strong>the</strong>y pr<strong>of</strong>essed <strong>to</strong> act, was that while<br />

society is one, it is divided <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> two great<br />

spheres <strong>of</strong> Church and State; that as members <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first – that is, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church – <strong>the</strong>y formed an<br />

organization dist<strong>in</strong>ct from that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State; that this<br />

organization was constituted upon a dist<strong>in</strong>ct basis,<br />

that <strong>of</strong> Revelation; that it was placed under a<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ct Head, namely, Christ; that it had dist<strong>in</strong>ct<br />

rights and laws given it by God; and that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

exercise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se rights and laws, for its own proper<br />

ends, it was not dependence upon, or accountable<br />

<strong>to</strong>, <strong>the</strong> State. This view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church's orig<strong>in</strong> and<br />

constitution makes her claims and jurisdiction<br />

perfectly <strong>in</strong>telligible; and gives, as <strong>the</strong> French style<br />

it, her raison d'etre. It may not be assented <strong>to</strong> by all,<br />

but even where it is not admitted it can be<br />

unders<strong>to</strong>od, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Church, whe<strong>the</strong>r right or wrong <strong>in</strong> fact, on which<br />

we are here pronounc<strong>in</strong>g no op<strong>in</strong>ion, will be seen<br />
