a hammer. And <strong>the</strong>se cha<strong>in</strong>s with collars are about<br />

two feet apart, and as <strong>the</strong> beams are generally<br />

about forty feet long, twenty men are cha<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> file. This cellar which is round, is so large<br />

that <strong>in</strong> this way <strong>the</strong>y can cha<strong>in</strong> up as many as five<br />

hundred. There is noth<strong>in</strong>g so dreadful as <strong>to</strong> behold<br />

<strong>the</strong> attitudes and postures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se wretches <strong>the</strong>re<br />

cha<strong>in</strong>ed. For a man so cha<strong>in</strong>ed cannot lie down at<br />
