No: accept<strong>in</strong>g martyrdom beforehand, he writes<br />

a farewell letter <strong>to</strong> those at his fa<strong>the</strong>r's house, and<br />

goes forth <strong>to</strong> break <strong>the</strong> silence which <strong>the</strong><br />

banishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>isters had created <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong><br />

by preach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Gospel. In a little while he was<br />

arrested. On his trial he was promised <strong>the</strong> most<br />

flatter<strong>in</strong>g favors if he would abjure, but his<br />

constancy was <strong>in</strong>v<strong>in</strong>cible.<br />

He was sentenced <strong>to</strong> be hanged, after hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

been <strong>to</strong>rtured. On hear<strong>in</strong>g his doom, he exclaimed,<br />

"I am treated more gently than my Savior was <strong>in</strong><br />

be<strong>in</strong>g condemned <strong>to</strong> so mild a form <strong>of</strong> death. I had<br />

prepared my m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>to</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g broken on <strong>the</strong> wheel, or<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g burnt <strong>to</strong> death." Then, rais<strong>in</strong>g his eyes <strong>to</strong><br />

heaven, he gave thanks <strong>to</strong> God for this mitigation<br />

<strong>of</strong> his anticipated agonies. Be<strong>in</strong>g come <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

scaffold, he wished <strong>to</strong> address <strong>the</strong> crowd, and<br />

confess before <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> faith <strong>in</strong> which he died; but,<br />

says Jurieu, "<strong>the</strong>y were afraid <strong>of</strong> a sermon<br />
