HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

GOD, THE ONE GREAT CIRCUMSTANCE 93<br />

<strong>The</strong> promise was pleaded in faith, and "a deep, deep,<br />

unspeakable peace and joy" filled his heart. All consciousness<br />

of distance was gone, though every moment<br />

before had seemed an age. It was the peace of <strong>God</strong><br />

which passeth all understanding.<br />

Dr. Parker, when consulted, approved the remedy<br />

suggested, but when Hudson Taylor reached- home he<br />

found that the Great Physician Himself had been present<br />

and done His work. <strong>The</strong> pinched aspect of the<br />

property of the litt1e European community were in<br />

imminent peril. Some of them indeed left the city, but<br />

Hudson Taylor and his wife would not forsake the little<br />

Christian community.<br />

"We are living", wrote Mr. Jones at this time, "from<br />

night to day and day to night. <strong>The</strong> people are thirsting for<br />

revenge. <strong>The</strong>y mix up together missionaries, traders, and the<br />

government, the war, and the coolie traffic .... <strong>The</strong>y have<br />

placarded the streets calling for our blood .... We are now<br />

in the midst of this, our wives and our little ones in the same<br />

danger. But we are resting on Him <strong>who</strong> restrains our enemies<br />

with 'Thus far, but no further'."<br />

It was July, and the fierce heat of summer was almost<br />

insufferable, while the heat was aggravated <strong>by</strong> the<br />

angry crowds which surged without; and, at times,<br />

threatened to break in the doors. And that home on
