HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

THE MAN HIMSELF 209
Such letters were, as he said, "as a very box of alabaster,
broken at the feet of our Lord, whose fragrance
filled our heart, as well as rejoiced His". His own heartfelt
appreciation, and the personal touch in all his letters
acknowledging such gifts, could hardly fail to knit
donor and receiver together in a ·common fellowship for
China.
"Are we not partners in this blessed, most blessed service?"
he wrote to the friends at home in a letter from the
heart of China. "You supply by your sympathy, and prayers,
and contributions, our lack; and we who are here seek to
make up for your personal inability to preach Christ among
the Chinese."
It will have been seen that it was much more than
the gifts themselves which moved his heart. With the
Apostle Paul he could say: "Not that I seek for the gift;
but I seek for the fruit that increaseth to your account."
It is therefore no great transition in thought to pass
from this devotion to China to his largeness of heart towards
all God's people, and all God's work.
"When you are praying for China", he wrote, "always
bear in mind what a God He is to whom we are drawing near.
China is not a great thing for Him, though it is a great thing
for us. Let us bear in mind that His love is as great to India
and Africa, and all parts of the world, as to China. Let us
seek to cultivate largeness of heart; it will be a blessing to
our own souls, and it will bring us into deeper sympathy with
God."
This was the spirit he ever cultivated himself.
Though deeply engrossed in his own work for China, and
bearing heavy responsibilities, he rejoi:~d in the prosperity
of every organization for the spread of the Gospel.
This was manifest in many ways. In the columns of
China's Millions he published comprehensive surveys
