HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

THE MAN HIMSELF 213
"To return, the miracle was wrought methodically. The
disciples were not told to act in any erratic or fanatical way,
but the common-sense that God had given them was to be•
used. Our Saviour Himself methodized His arrangements,
and gave them the work to do in a way in which it was possible
speedily and satisfactorily to accomplish it."
His appeal at this time was for "intelligent obedience".
Another aspect of his sagacity was his anxiety to
appear always loyal to the Chinese Government.
"The fact that there is so much to deplore'', he wrote in
a letter to the friends of the Mission, "must not lead us to
forget that there is also much-very much-to commend.
Under the providence of God we enjoy a large measure of
peace and safety, protection and facility for the prosecution
of our work through the rule of the present dynasty .... It
will only help us for it to be known that true Christians are
loyal, and seek the good of those that rule China, as well as
of the governed."
Without being dilettante, Hudson Taylor was exact
and precise in the smallest details, as well as in the
larger issues. This was specially noticeable in his handwriting
up to the end. And this arose from his sense of
responsibility to God in all things, the least as well as
the greatest. No one can understand his character if this
be overlooked.
"Should not the little things of our daily life", he wrote,
"be as relatively perfect in the case of each Christian as the
lesser creations of God [a butterfly's wing] are absolutely
perfect. Ought we not to glorify God in the formation of each
letter that we write, and as Christians to write a more legible
hand than unconverted people can be expected to do? Ought
we not to be more thorough in our serviq:l~ not simply doing
well that which will be seen and noticed, but as our Father
makes many a flower to bloom unseen, in the lonely desert,
so to do all that we can do, as under His eye, though no other
eye ever take note of it?
