HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

A GOD WHO RAISETH THE DEAD 47<br />

newly assumed imperial arms, for he not only conceived<br />

the idea of destroying idolatry, but even aspired<br />

to the overthrow of the Manchu Dynasty.<br />

In the spring of r852 the Taiping rebels commenced<br />

their northward advance, and <strong>by</strong> March, r853, had seized<br />

Nanking, an old capital of the Empire, where they proclaimed<br />

the new dynasty under the name of Taiping, or<br />

"Great Peace". By this time Hung's followers numbered<br />

Society was stirred. Here appeared the great and<br />

effectual door for which they had prayed, an opportunity<br />

surpassing their highest hopes. And so it was resolved<br />

that young Hudson Taylor should be asked if he<br />

were willing to go forth without delay.<br />

And so it came to pass, that on Saturday afternoon,<br />

June 4, r853, Mr. Bird, one of the Secretaries of the<br />

Society, sat in his office at r7 Red Lion Square, London,<br />

writing to Hudson Taylor. But no sooner was his letter<br />

finished, and ready for posting, than a knock came at<br />

the door, and <strong>who</strong> should walk in but Hudson Taylor<br />

himself. Was this a mere coincidence? or, was it a sign<br />

of <strong>God</strong>'s leading? Both parties took it as providential<br />

proof. But Hudson Taylor, none the less, resolved to<br />

await the blessing of his parents before giving his final<br />

consent. He was quite prepared to sail without going<br />

home for a last farewell; in fact he wrote:<br />

"I almost think it would be easiest for us not to meet<br />

than having met to part again for ever. It is easy to talk of<br />

leaving all for Christ, but when it comes to the proof-it is
