HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

40 THE MAN WHO BELIEVED GOD<br />

"I feel as if I could not live if something is not done for<br />

China", he wrote to his Mother.<br />

So in August, 1852, he gave Dr. Hardey notice.<br />

"My mind is quite as much at rest," he wrote, "nay,<br />

more than it would be if I had a hundred pounds in my<br />

pocket. May He keep me ever thus."<br />

Here we see, in the youth of twenty, the spirit of the<br />

<strong>man</strong> <strong>who</strong> was being fitted for larger trusts in days to<br />

come.<br />

It was not long after this that an uncle in London<br />

offered him a home if he could find employment, while<br />

the Chinese Evangelization Society offered to pay his<br />

hospita1 fees. In September he wrote to his sister:<br />

"Now I have a home to go to, money to pay the fees at<br />

the Ophthalmic Hospital as well as the course at the London .<br />

. . . When He sees fit, if He sees fit, He will find me a suitable<br />

situation, and if not, He will provide for and occupy me as<br />

seems best to Him .... Last Autumn I was fretting and<br />

stewing, reckoning and puzzling about how to <strong>man</strong>age this<br />

and that ... but it all came to nothing. Now when the Lord<br />

opens the way, though everything seems adverse, He first<br />

removes one difficulty and then another, plainly saying,<br />

'Be still and know that I am <strong>God</strong>' .... I will not trust in my<br />

bow nor shall my sword save me. 'In <strong>God</strong> we boast all the<br />

day long.' "
